In every aspect of our daily lives we consume energy in various forms. Almost all of these activities produce greenhouse gases that affect our atmosphere, resulting in changes to our climate.

International concern about global climate change has resulted in the Kyoto Protocol. This sets targets for the greenhouse gas emissions of various countries. Australia's target over the period 2008-2012 is to contain emissions to 108% of 1990 emission levels, equivalent to about 35 per cent reduction in projected business-as-usual levels.

All states and territories have worked with the Commonwealth Government to prepare a National Greenhouse Strategy that sets out ways to meet these targets. There is a clear recognition that our economic activity - which drives our consumption of energy - must become increasingly more sustainable.

The South Australian Government recently released Tackling Climate Change: South Australia's Greenhouse Strategy. This provides a comprehensive and detailed strategy, which sets out specific goals and targets for South Australia to address climate change, and the means to reach them.

This strategy outlines many of the state and national programs which have been established to help achieve South Australia's sustainable energy goals. It includes actions which individuals, households, businesses, industries and communities can take, in addition to Government initiatives. It tells you how you can become involved yourself or where you can go for more information about other programs.
